Emily Koopman: Can you start off by introducing yourself, and telling us a little bit about your musical background?
Desert Tundra: My name is Janet and I’m the front woman of the band Desert Tundra. When I was 11 years old a friend of mine gave me a CD of Bikini Kill’s Rebel Girl and I became obsessed with all girl punk bands like Hole, Le Tigre and The Donna’s to name a few. After a few years of guitar and voice lessons I started playing in punk bands. I’ve pretty much been in bands my entire life.
Emily: What is the last song you wrote about?
Desert Tundra:The last song I wrote is about a break up with a guy I recently had. Writing songs has always been cathartic.
Emily:What are your musts while being in the studio?
Desert Tundra:My absolute musts are hot tea, honey and a lot of water. Some mood lighting like candles and stuff help as well.
Emily: Janet, you ended up living in an apartment with three guys (just like the show New Girl!) What was that like? And if you could pick any 3 celebrities to share an apartment with (dead or alive) who would they be?
Desert Tundra:Yes, it was exactly like the show New Girl, but not as glamorous. It was a unique experience that’s for sure. I chose that living situation when I first moved to Hollywood because it was the most inexpensive. The guys who I lived with we’re all creative types, so it was a great environment to be in. It was completely outside of my comfort zone, especially having to share one bathroom.
First, would be Kurt Cobain because I feel like we would totally get along. I’ve watched a lot of documentaries about him lately and I see a lot of similarities in our personalities. Not to mention that he’s arguably one of the most talented singer songwriters who ever lived.
Second, would be Oprah Winfrey. I feel like she would be a great confidante and friend to have. The wisdom and knowledge she has is mind blowing. I’ve gotten some of the best “life lessons” from her, which I apply to my personal journey with Desert Tundra. Such as learning to live outside of your comfort zone and “dreaming a bigger dream than you can dream for yourself.”
Third, would be Kellin Quinn just because I have a huge crush on him, you have to give me that one, ha!
Emily: Do you have any tour plans?
Desert Tundra:Yes, after the release of our upcoming EP early 2017 we are planning a West Coast Tour. Possibly a few East Coast cities as well.
Emily: What are some of your musical guilty pleasures?
Desert Tundra:I recently just started listening to Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj. I would consider them guilty pleasures because they’re so mainstream pop that I never expected to be into them. I’ve secretly added “A Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga and “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj to my current playlist.
