Emily Koopman: When can we expect an EP or full-length album from you? In what vein do you want your album to fall? And what do you want people to take away from it?
Alec Benjamin: I am hoping to release an EP or album at the beginning of next year! But first, I am going to be seeding out some snippets of songs and live performances on my socials. I love listening to songwriters that tell stories. I’m not really sure what I would like people to take away from listening to my album… I hope that people will listen to the songs and the lyrics and that they relate to them in their own way.
Emily: How did you come to be signed with Columbia Records? That’s a pretty big deal! Can you tell us how it went down, and what the process was like?
Alec: I started out just writing songs in my living room. After high school graduation I moved out to Los Angeles. After moving to LA, I started traveling back and forth from LA to the UK. I started writing songs, recording music and playing small shows in Europe. Hanging around in Europe gave me the opportunity meet and learn from a ton of amazing artists/songwriters and that really helped me grow. When I got back to LA, I performed and started to share the material that I had been working on. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell!
Emily: Aside from music, what are some of your other interests?
Alec: I like riding my bike and skateboarding. I also like running naked around my living room with one sock on. I also enjoy making spit balls at restaurants and that feeling of relief you get after sneezing.
Emily: If you could only have one collaboration on your EP or album, who would it be with, and what kind of song would it be?
Alec: I would love to work on a song with Paul Simon. That would be a dream come true. I’d also like to do a track with Riff Raff.
Emily: Which Disney character do you feel you’re most like, and why?
Alec: Star Wars is Disney now, right? So maybe Jar Jar Binks. Cuz I luv Jar Jar.
Emily: Do you have one accomplishment that you look back on and think, “wow, that was the coolest thing I ever did?”
Alec: Last night I ate an extra large cheese pizza by myself. Couldn’t believe it, but I was pretty proud.
Emily: What songs do you think would be included on the soundtrack of your life?
Alec: One song only. That song is “Sandstorm” by Darude.
Emily: Do you have a favourite quote or saying?
Alec: Hmmmm. “Never give up, Never surrender!” my dad always says it. And it’s from Galaxy Quest which is an awesome movie!
Emily: What was the first song you ever wrote, and what was it about?
Alec: It’s called “Beautiful Pain” and it’s about my grandfather passing away.
Emily: Last but not least — what’s next for you?
Alec: Probably gunna brush my teeth. I haven’t all day and my breath smellz.
